Gerontological nursing is important to meet the health needs of an aging population. Geriatric nurses are responsible for helping elderly patients cope with existing geriatrics diseases. Concierge medicine is a relationship between a patient and a geriatrics physician in which the patient pays an annual fee or retainer. This may or may not be in addition to other charges. In exchange for the retainer, doctors provide enhanced care, including principally a commitment to limit patient loads to ensure adequate time and availability for each patient.

Track 05: Geriatric Medicine & Psychiatry

Geriatric Psychiatry emphasizes the biological and psychological aspects of normal aging, the psychiatric effect of acute and chronic physical illness, and the biological and psychosocial aspects of the pathology of primary psychiatric disturbances of older age. Geriatrics physicians focus on prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional and sleep disorders in the elderly and improvement of geriatrics care for healthy and ill elderly patients.

Track 06: Geriatric Medicine & End-of-life care

Older people often live with one or more chronic illnesses and need a lot of care for days, weeks, and even months before death. End of life care is used to describe the support and geriatrics care given during the time surrounding death, not only of patients in the final hours or days of their lives, but more broadly care of all those with a terminal illness or terminal disease condition that has become advanced, progressive and incurable.

Aging reflects all the changes that occur over the course of life, encompassing physical, psychological, and social change.
